IB Inclusion Policy
IB Course Enrollment
Across District U-46, the Special Education Department believes a cooperative effort between parents and the school is necessary to provide the most beneficial programs and services for students. Parents are encouraged to contact their children’s teachers and building administration with any questions or concerns related to the programs and services provided. School service team staff and supervisors are also available to assist parents and students. The Special Education staff is committed to working with parents to provide a positive, productive learning environment for students.
District U-46 maintains a full continuum of special education instructional programs, resource programs and related services options based on the nature and degree of the intervention needed for students. For more information on the various services and programming available, please visit the district site at: https://www.u-46.org/domain/6565
At Elgin High School, we are committed to our District’s work in providing the most appropriate learning experiences for all students. Through collaborative efforts with parents, case managers, counselors, and members of the administrative team, Elgin High School ensures all students have access to the most appropriate coursework each school year.
Access for Students with IEPs and 504s
Examination accommodations will be determined based upon a student’s IEP or 504 plan as observed in the classroom. Supporting documents may also be required to apply for IB examination accommodations. These documents may include medical records or an official recorded statement from a course IB teacher, the IB Coordinator, or AP of Student Services documenting the need for such accommodations.
Students with IEPs and 504 plans who are enrolled in IB courses shall receive the same in-class accommodations for all IB courses as they receive in all non-IB courses a student may elect to enroll in.
While there are some limitations to the approved accommodations available to students in official IB assessments, students will find that most of their classroom accommodations apply to the IB assessments. Some of the approved accommodations for IB assessments include:
Access for Additional Language Learners
Students who are assessing in a language that is not their mother language, and do not have the same level of academic or technical use of the academic language, may be eligible for specified accommodations for oral or written IB examinations. These may include:
Student need for examination accommodations will be determined by the annual scoring of the school-administered ACCESS tests.
Students who demonstrate proficiency on an IB examination that is given in their non-native language will be eligible for the bilingual IB Diploma.
Policy Review
Elgin High School’s DP Inclusion and Special Need Policy is to be reviewed every other odd-numbered year by the EHS IB Committee members, teacher department leadership committees including SIP and SD, building pedagogical leadership team, and parents. Review Team members will ensure this policy continues to appropriately support students in accessing the IB course curriculum and examinations.
