IB Assesssments
Students enrolled in IB courses engage in a series of assessment tasks that align with IB criteria to determine a student's acquisition of the skills and content taught in each of their IB classes.
The exam scores awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Full DP students can also be awarded up to three additional points for their combined results on the Theory of Knowledge assessments and the Extended Essay.
IB assessments are criterion-related, which means student performance is measured against pre-specified assessment criteria designed from the objectives and focus of the curricular areas students study.

Internal Assessments vs External Examinations
The IB program utilizes both internally and externally scored assessments to determine a student's development and acquisition of knowledge and skills in each IB course.
External assessments generally consist of end-of-course examinations that occur in the spring of a student's senior year at Elgin High School. These examinations provide students with an opportunity to express what they have learned through analysis and synthesis types of formats. These include, but are not limited to: essays, short-response questions, data-response questions, and case studies.
Internal assessments are designed and directed by the BI and are assigned by the classroom teacher. The are typically completed over an extended period of time. Internal Assessments may include oral presentations in the language of instruction, laboratory write-ups, mathematical investigations, and performances/demonstrations.
Internal assessments are scored by the classroom teacher first, and then submitted to IB score moderators to ensure that Elgin High School IB teachers are carrying out the course and grading practices with fidelity.
